Alfonso Valencia is ICREA research Professor, Director of the Life Sciences Department of the Barcelona Supercomputing Center, Director of the Spanish National Bioinformatics Institute INB\/ELIXIR\/ES and coordinator of the data pillar of the Spanish Personalized Medicine initiative, IMPaCT. <\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"elementor-repeater-item-d18e241 swiper-slide\" role=\"group\" aria-roledescription=\"slide\"><div class=\"swiper-slide-bg\" role=\"img\"><\/div><div class=\"swiper-slide-inner\" ><div class=\"swiper-slide-contents\"><div class=\"elementor-slide-description\">His research interest is the development of Computational Biology methods and their application to biomedical problems. Some of the computational methods he developed are considered pioneering work in areas such as biological text mining, protein coevolution, disease networks and more recently modeling cellular systemms (digital twins).<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"elementor-repeater-item-c2242cf swiper-slide\" role=\"group\" aria-roledescription=\"slide\"><div class=\"swiper-slide-bg\" role=\"img\"><\/div><div class=\"swiper-slide-inner\" ><div class=\"swiper-slide-contents\"><div class=\"elementor-slide-description\">He participates in some of the key cancer related international consortia. In terms of community services, he is one of the intial promoters of the ELIXIR infrastructure, founder of the Spanish and International Bioinformatics networks and former president of ISCB, the international professional association of Bioinformaticians. Dr. Peirce-Cottler received Bachelor's of Science degrees in Biomedical Engineering and Engineering Mechanics and Johns Hopkins University in 1997. <\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"elementor-repeater-item-98b9476 swiper-slide\" role=\"group\" aria-roledescription=\"slide\"><div class=\"swiper-slide-bg\" role=\"img\"><\/div><div class=\"swiper-slide-inner\" ><div class=\"swiper-slide-contents\"><div class=\"elementor-slide-description\">She earned her Ph.D. in the Department of Biomedical Engineering at the University of Virginia in 2002. Dr. Peirce-Cottler develops computational models and combines them them with wet lab experiments to study how tissues heal after injuryand to develop therapies for inducing tissue regeneration. She teaches courses in cell and molecular physiology and computational systems bioengineering to undergraduate and graduate students.<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"elementor-repeater-item-6040064 swiper-slide\" role=\"group\" aria-roledescription=\"slide\"><div class=\"swiper-slide-bg\" role=\"img\"><\/div><div class=\"swiper-slide-inner\" ><div class=\"swiper-slide-contents\"><div class=\"elementor-slide-description\">Dr. Perice-Cottler has published over 150 peer-reviewed papers abd book chapters and she is an inventor on three U.S. patents. She is a fellow in both, the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering College of Fellows (AIMBE) and the Biomedical Engineering Society (BMES). She is also Past-President of the Microcirculatory Society and the recipient of the 2024 Eugene M. Landis Award for Microvascular Research.<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"elementor-repeater-item-c0fc148 swiper-slide\" role=\"group\" aria-roledescription=\"slide\"><div class=\"swiper-slide-bg\" role=\"img\"><\/div><div class=\"swiper-slide-inner\" ><div class=\"swiper-slide-contents\"><div class=\"elementor-slide-description\"> Dr. Peirce-Cottler is a UVA School of Medicine Pinn Scholar, and in 2020 she was awarded the UVA School of Medicine's Robert H. Kader Award for Excellence in Graduate Teaching and Mentoring. Dr. Peirce-Cottler is passionate about metoring student's and faculty, promoting diversity in STEM, and participating in K-12 outreach to increase students' interests and self\/confidence in pursuing Computational investigations of pregnancy have great potential to explore fundamental aspects of reproductive physiology that are otherwise difficult or even impossible to investigate in humans. There are few-to-no good animal models of human pregnancy, and the reasonable ethical restrictions on experimentation with pregnant women limit clinical research. This talk will discuss how image-based computational modeling techniques can be used across length-scales to study different aspects of human pregnancy. Examples considered will include maternal-fetal oxygen transport in the placenta, and stresses in C-section scar defects at risk of rupture in subsequent pregnancies. With the recent worldwide attention given to poor maternal and fetal outcomes, fundamental bioengineering research into the mechanisms of preterm birth is timely and necessary. Prior to her current appointment, she was on the faculty at the University of Cambridge (2006\u201318) in the UK and then briefly at East Carolina University (2018\u201321). Michelle has degrees in Materials Science and Engineering (BS), Engineering Mechanics (MS), and a PhD in Biophysical Sciences. She has worked on many problems in tissue biomechanics and biomimetic materials. She has researched engineering approaches to pregnancy and women\u2019s health for over twenty years, particularly in methods to prevent, diagnose, and intervene in preterm birth. Current research projects include multi-scale modeling of placenta function, microstructural fracture models for amniotic sac rupture, and physical properties of the healthy and pathological shaping therapy strategies. Despite promising early examples, the scalability of this technology remains a significant challenge, necessitating a shift from artisanal, bespoke solutions to a streamlined, automated workflow.<br \/>Scaling cardiac digital twins to reduce the computational and labour costs in their creation, will open the door to characterizing and studying patient cohorts and whole population variation providing new insight into cardiovascular physiology and health. Reducing manual steps in model creation will improve precision, allowing effective studies with smaller numbers of patients. Finally, scaling cardiac digital twins is needed to bring them into routine clinical care. Unfortunately, many conditions, including cerebral palsy, osteoarthritis, injuries, and stroke, limit the ability of many people to move, at a great cost to public health and personal well-being. The proliferation of devices monitoring human activity, including mobile phones and an ever-growing array of wearable sensors, is generating unprecedented quantities of data describing human movement. Movement data is also being collected daily by hundreds of clinical centers and research laboratories around the world. A focus of my laboratory is to overcome the data science challenges and advance the analysis of big data to improve human movement across the wide range of conditions that limit mobility. Clark Professor of Bioengineering, Mechanical Engineering, and Orthopaedic Surgery at <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Stanford_University\">Stanford University<\/a>. He is the Founding Chairman of the Department of Bioengineering at Stanford and Director of the <a href=\"https:\/\/humanperformance.stanford.edu\/\">Wu Tsai Human Performance Alliance<\/a>, which aims to transform human health through the science of peak performance. Dr. Delp is also the Director of the <a href=\"https:\/\/restore.stanford.edu\/\">RESTORE Center<\/a>, a NIH national center focused on measuring real world rehabilitation outcomes and Director of the <a href=\"https:\/\/mobilize.stanford.edu\/\">Mobilize Center<\/a>, a NIH National Center of Excellence focused on Big Data and Digital Health. <a href=\"https:\/\/nmbl.stanford.edu\/\">Scott\u2019s laboratory<\/a> develops technologies to advance movement science and human health. Software tools created in his lab, including <a href=\"https:\/\/simtk.org\/projects\/opensim\">OpenSim<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.opencap.ai\/\">OpenCap<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/addbiomechanics.org\/\">AddBiomechanics<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/simtk.org\/\">Simtk.org<\/a>, have become the basis of an international collaboration involving thousands of scientists. He has published over <a href=\"https:\/\/scholar.google.com\/citations?user=OEivUAQAAAAJ&amp;hl=en\/\">300 research articles<\/a> and has recently released a book from MIT Press entitled <a href=\"https:\/\/biomech.stanford.edu\/\"><em>Biomechanics of Movement<\/em><\/a><em>: The Science of Sports, Robotics, and Rehabilitation<\/em>.
